Things to Do in Masindi

Masindi was developed as a commercial centre due to trade in cotton during the second half of the 19th century, and also served as a vital colonial transport hub (via the historic Masindi Hotel) connecting goods and cargo such as machinery for gold fields via a steamer service from the Belgian Congo across Lake Albert to Butiaba in Uganda. Passengers and goods were then transferred to road transport for the journey to Masindi Port and then onto another steamer service across Lake Kyoga from Masindi Port to Namasagali, given that the Karuma Falls and Murchison Falls on the Victoria Nile between Lake Kyoga and Lake Albert made navigation impossible for the steamboats. They were then connected to the Uganda Railway, destined for export to European markets.

Given its function, there is little to see and do in Masindi itself; rather, the town is seen today as a gateway to the Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda's largest national park, and Budongo Forest. The Masindi Hotel, Uganda's oldest hotel, was built in 1923 by the now-defunct East Africa Railways and Harbours Company. For trivia lovers, amongst the hotel's better-known guests were Ernest Hemingway, Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. If you know of other things to do in Masindi, please let us know.
