Western Uganda Guide

Western Uganda Guide

Covering an area of some 55,277 km², Western Uganda contains twenty six districts and is one of the four regions of Uganda. At the Western Uganda Network we aim to provide an ever increasing portfolio of information about Western Uganda, so use us as a guide to discover the best things to do, top tourist attractions, where to stay and eat and find hidden attractions in this unspoilt corner of Africa!

A diverse tourist destination...

From the stunning Rwenzori Mountains to National Parks with their abundant wildlife, Western Uganda has so many unspoilt tourist attractions for the visitor including gorilla trekking, museums, lakes and waterfalls. When people think of Africa as a tourist destination, Uganda is probably not on top of their list with many not realising that the days of Idi Amin are long gone with the country enjoying long term stability for the last three decades. A country unspoilt by commercialised tourism, Uganda is gaining in popularity not least because of a host of awards by organisations such as National Geographic and Lonely Planet recognising it as one of the top travel destinations in the world making tourism growth in Uganda the fastest in Africa.

Western Uganda is perhaps the "pearl" of the "Pearl of Africa" with its national parks, forests, lakes and the opportunity to go gorilla trekking and witness an abundance of other wildlife live and close-up. Its also an ideal base for visits to neighbouring Rwanda and Tanzania. Most people enter Uganda via Entebbe airport and a hotel room in that town can cost as little as £10 a night, including breakfast. Then its a simple matter of heading south and basing yourself in Mbarara or homestay accommodation in such central villages as Ruhanga where a traditional welcome awaits. Check out this guide and pay a visit to the peaceful world of western Uganda with its rolling hills, mountains and fantastic hospitality!
