Hoima Guide

Hoima, located in the western part of Uganda, was granted city status in 2020 and was an important cultural and spiritual centre for the Bunyoro Kingdom, one of the most traditional Bantu kingdoms in Uganda and a remnant of one of the most powerful empires in East and Central Africa from 13th century to the 19th century, the Bunyoro-Kitara Empire. The kingdom enjoys a rich history, and its influence can still be seen in the city's architecture, art, and cultural practices. The kingdom was disbanded in 1967, but re-established in 1993 and is currently ruled by King (Omukama) Rukirabasaija Agutamba Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I (born 1948), who has been the 27th Omukama from 1994 to present. The people of Hoima take great pride in their heritage, and this is reflected in their daily lives, from the traditional clothing they wear to the local customs they practice.

Today, Hoima, with its population of some 122,700, is a major commercial centre in the region, with a thriving market that sells everything from fresh produce to handicrafts and is also an important hub for the oil and gas industry, with several major companies operating in the area. This has led to a significant influx of investment and job opportunities in the town, contributing to its rapid growth and development. However, despite the economic growth, Hoima still faces challenges related to poverty and inequality, and efforts are being made to address these issues and ensure that the benefits of economic development are shared by all members of the community.

Hoima is home to several places of interest, including the Hoima Museum, which showcases the history and culture of the Bunyoro Kingdom. The museum features a collection of artefacts, including traditional clothing, jewellery, and musical instruments, as well as exhibits on the kingdom's history and customs. Another popular attraction is the Katara Fishing Village, which is located on the shores of Lake Albert and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. In addition to its local attractions, Hoima is also a great base for exploring the surrounding region, which is home to several nearby tourist attractions. One of the most popular destinations is the Murchison Falls National Park, which is located about an hour's drive from Hoima. The park is one of Uganda's most famous national parks and is home to a wide range of wildlife, including lions, leopards, and elephants. Visitors can take a guided tour of the park, which includes a boat trip to the foot of the falls, as well as game drives and hiking excursions. Another popular destination is the Budongo Forest, which is located about a 30-minute drive from Hoima. The forest is home to a wide range of wildlife, including chimpanzees, monkeys, and birds, and offers guided tours and hiking trails.

Hoima is also close to several other national parks and game reserves, including the Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Kibale National Park. These parks offer a wide range of activities, including game drives, boat trips, and hiking excursions, and are home to a diverse range of wildlife, including lions, leopards, and chimpanzees. Visitors to Hoima can also take a trip to the nearby town of Masindi, which is known for its vibrant cultural scene and traditional crafts. The town is home to several local artists and artisans, who sell their wares at the local market, and visitors can also take a tour of the nearby Masindi Port, with its stunning countryside views.
